Introduction to the Study of Chinese
Literature

Reading Materials: Selected readings of poetry, essays and
fiction from the May Fourth Era to 2000 which were published in
Goals: This class is designed to introduce modern Chinese
literature, including poetry, essays and fiction, in seminar form. Knowledge, appreciation and arguments
regarding important modern Chinese literary works and their writers will be
stressed.
Requirements:
a) Read the
text(s) assigned for each session before attending the class.
b)
Analyze the thoughts, diction and organization of each text.
c) Organize your
own views and questions concerning each text.
II.
Class Discussions:
a) You are
strongly encouraged to raise your own views and questions concerning each text
either in English or Mandarin in class.
b) Arguments are
preferable to be engaged in a friendly, rational manner.
c) Quality of
your discussions of texts will be graded according to your understanding,
interpretation
and
insight observed in class discussions.
III.
Tests:
a) Two tests
will be given on poetry readings and essay readings respectively.
b) Each test
consists of 5 questions; the 1st question is required, and you can select 2
from the rest of

to answer.
IV. Presentations:
a) Team presentation: 1) Each team will
be assigned to introduce one of the fiction
reading texts;
2)
Write a 2-page-long summary and a 2-page-long critique; 3) Make photo copies of
your summary and critique for all the class participants; 4) Present your
summary and critique in class.
b) Final individual presentation :
1) Write an essay on any literary work(s), writer(s) or issue(s) introduced in
this class no less than 1,200 words in Chinese or 4 pages in English; 2) read
your essay in class; 3) conduct a
discussion after the reading.
Note: Students who want to receive course credits from lower
Chinese levels must write all the
required essays in Chinese.
Grading:
II. Class Discussions 10%
III. Tests 40%
IV. Team presentation 20%
V. Final individual presentation 20%
Attention: Excessive
absences will be reflected in class attendance & preparation grade. Over 2 absences, each will cost 1% out of 10%
class performance.
